We had a great Christmas at CRAZY PIG DESIGNS

Well ,Another year is nearly over, and despite all the

DOOM and GLOOM courtesy of our useless politicians and bankers,

many of us have worked harder than ever in 2011

1952 LES PAUL GOLD TOP , TRAPEAZE SOLUTION

After many months on working on this project both the TRAPEAZE and

its dedicated website are now ready and LIVE!

As a guitarist and collector I always loved 50's Les Pauls

Well of course they are not cheap ,we all know that.

Funnily enough the older the 50's Les Pauls are the cheapest they are

This is due to a major flaw in the design in the early 1952 and 1953 gold top models.

The problem being, the totally useless trapeze with strings wrapping under a

big chunky steel bar, making it impossible to mute the strings when needed.

It took Gibson 2 years to redesign the GOLD TOP , in 1954 they changed the neck angle

and bolted a wrapover tailpiece straigth into the body as a remedy.

Nowadays a 1952/53 Gold top will cost about £10K

in comparison,the second version will cost at least double that amount.

This bugged me for years, so I embarked on designing the TRAPEAZE SOLUTION

The same way I make jewellery , I carved a PROTOTYPE and cast in

various metals, and test each one on a real 1952 LES PAUL

After many modifications, upgrades and tests, the TRAPRAZE is ready.

IT REALLY WORKS JUST GREAT.

It takes a few minutes to install and needs NO modifications to the guitar

My very first customer is no other than RICK NIELSEN of CHEAP TRICK

my second customer BILLY GIBBONS of this LIL OLD BAND fromTEJAS

Both great guitarists and VINTAGE GUITAR AFFICIONADOS.

My TRAPEAZE is totally hand made one at a time just like all the jewellery

The copies were basically rough , very little detail ,badly finished and also much lighter

other bracelets had links were not soldered shut and had cheap claps that were coming apart.

Unfortunatly for these customers we had to tell them that these copies had

nothing to do with CRAZY PIG DESIGNS and we could not fix any of problems

they had encountered.

Digging around boxes of CRAZY PIG reviews,articles , photos and old archives
I found this page from the ROLLING STONES, BRIDGES OF BABYLON
Tour program.
I remember getting a call from the Rolling Stones office once, as they needed to get some jewellery
for all four band members , Yes that's right even CHARLIE!
So we sent whole bunch of things, Wallet chains, Skull rings,Stone rings ( no pun intended)
Basically a large selection of the best
CRAZY PIG DESIGNS classics.
KEITH RICHARDS , MICK JAGGER and RON WOOD all chose to wear many items
from our selection,
A few weeks later we got a call to invoice for many of the items
KEITH , MICK and RON had decided to keep for themselves.
The only one that did not was CHARLIE
Of course we got to see the STONES many times but it was a trully great surprise to
be listed in credits of the BRIDGES TO BABYLON TOUR.

OOPS! we just realised that we made a tiny, but funny spelling mistake
on the new FUCK EM ALL band.
The very first batch of approximatly six rings have been made with the
apostrophe in the wrong place as shown in this picture.

IGGY POP SKULL RING

With a album titled " SKULL RING" it comes to no suprise that
IGGY POP chose CRAZY PIG DESIGNS for the ultimate skull ring
We got a call that IGGY wanted to come to the CRAZY PIG DESIGNS
and chose for himself something COOL!
I was asked. at what time do you close
I said 6.30pm
he said he would be there at about 10pm?
So I sasid no problem , Ill wait for IGGY.
!0,30 came and went...
11.00 came and went...
11.30 no one..
at almost midnight IGGY arrived,to the store ( with on shoe missing?)
He said " Don't ask"
He had to finish some TV interview and was running late
IGGY and his beautiful lady spent a long time choosing
and they both settle for our SMALL EVIL SKU:LL RING
with saphires set in the eyes.

During concerts IGGY has to fight off the audience when they
try to take his SKULL RING from his fingers"
KEEP OFF! NO ONE IS GETTING MY SKULL RING!

After winnung the battle with the fans he climbs back on the bass rig
and gives the finger

My first job in CARNABY STREET

Well, I have been asked so many times, and through renewed requests on Facebook
from varous CRAZY PIG DESIGNS fans I decided to write this blog.
The question many people have asked me is
What was the store you worked for in CARNABY STREET selling
before you started working there.

As a guitar player I found myself with some spare time available,
so I looked for a part time job (2 days a week)
I went to Carnaby street and asked every store in the street
to see if there was any part time work
One store (the Great Frog) offered me a job selling their stuff 2 days a week .

My first impression ,
I am not gonna stay here long,
it looks like a headshop , kind of Hippie stuff , beads, feathers, candles, coke spoons, and similar paraphenelia.

Here's a selection of goods for sale there at the time ,
before I started designing and making my own jewellery designs.

HISTORY of THE PLAGUE SKULL RING as worn by CLIFF BURTON

When I design any ring I tend to have a basic idea as a starting point.
In the case the PLAGUE RING ,the idea came from a television
program about Paris catacombs.
I wanted to design a ring that would be as close as possible to a real skull.
Virtually all the skulls shown in the program had very few teeth left.
and gave a very dramatic and ghostly expression to the skull.
The difficulty was to get the skull ring to look "cool" even without any teeth.
I used a real skull as a model and copied every detail including the
empty cavities where the teeth had fallen out, leaving just a few at the
back of the jaw.
As mentionned in our webside, I have every single original model carving
for every piece I ever made,
The point is that every single ring is moulded from the first master
and retains all the detail that I mentionned above.

So word of advise....

There are copies off my PLAGUE RING , even the name has been copied

but it is just laughable, because all the detail that is on the original is simply gone!

The copies just look DUMB and TOOHTLESS.

so easy to spot.

The ida behing these is that you can choose for example our classic TUDOR TWO SKULL ring
and add either the matching single TUDOR SKULL ring or the TUDOR THREE SKULLS ring
You can comnine these three skull rings in any manner ytou choose to achieve a CLUSTER of SKULLS.
These are also great ideas for Engagement or Wedding rings.

We can customise them with rubies,emeralds, saphires or diamionds in the eyes
or PAVE set the whole skull with BLACK or WHITE diamonds to achieve
a really stunning SKULL RING

Take a close look and you'll notice that each of the skull is different from the others.

HARRY POTTER 's BELLATRIX skull ring story from CRAZY PIG DESIGNS

One afternoon the phone rang at the store ( CRAZY PIG DESIGNS)

and a lady said " MARRY POTTER"....(or so I thought)

She started to say she needed a CUSTOM MADE ring for a movie,

She was actually on the set of the film

and after a little while she had to get off the phone

because she was urgently required.

An hour later , the same thing happened

MARRY POTTER was on the phone...

So she said no it is not Mary Potter but HARRY POTTER!!!!!!

She wanted to meet me so I could make a very important item for the movie.

Later on we met at the store.

I was given details of what was required by the producer

He wanted a black stone set into our four claws setting ring

A coat of arms and shield was to be engraved on the black stone.

I explained that it was not a problem making such a ring but

in my opinion it was not a good idea.

First of all the ring was quite small , as it was a lady ring

( Helena Bonham Carter) and worse of all the shield design engraved

onto the black stone was too detailed and would be totally

invisible even with an extreme close up.

I was given 6 weeks to do the ring as designed by the producer.

Everytime I spoke to the wardrobe department, I said I was making the ring as required

but keep stressing the point that it was basically a BAD IDEA.

Two weeks before the deadline, the HARRY POTTER wardrobe deptartment

called me and said.

Yes you are right!

It s a bad idea, the ring will not have the impact we want,

Can you design a ring using some of the details from the coat of arms?

We trust your judgement but we the deadline is now two weeks!

Of course, I went to work right away and drew a quick sketch , a started

the BELLATRIX ring,Two weeks later it was ready and the Harry Potter

team were delighted with my design and ring so much so that it was featured on the poster

Sorry , but at present the BELLATRIX SKULL RING is NOT FOR SALE.

While digging through boxes in my garage I found some folders full of my early
schooldays drawings.These were done usually during classes on scraps of papers
note pads or whatever was at hand .All the drawings were done between the age

13 and18.
Here's a small selection for your attention....

I was really into comix book and fantasy artwork, I guess it was my

first steps into designing jewellery.

The point being that I think that to design and make quality jewellery

the very first skill required is a natural ability to draw ,

and I mean pen to paper not using a computer program.

Even if one can draw well it does not mean that carving will be second nature

Carving in 3 dimension is also another skill necessary for creating jewellery designs.

Again , nowadays many people are getting computer programed machines to

do their wax carvings, and usually the result is......FEEBLE!

Remember the movie "MEET THE FEEBLES"

Once you can draw, once you can carve, and once you can make jewellery
you can combine the three and add some rock& roll to the mix
you do what we do at CRAZY PIG DESIGNS.

A short while latewr he drove past again and wave at us...

Fifty five solid skulls , six roses and leaves, one winged sacred heart
and a Mexican classic cross all made in solid 18 carat white gold

THE ORIGINE of THE LARGE EVIL SKULL RING

Well. I ve been drawing since my early school days.

usually during classes.All of these doodles were done on scraps
of paper , at the time I was really into COMIX,
I drew a lot of skulls, monsters, animals, cartoons, superheroes,
famous musicians.At the time it was just messing around,
I have kept many of these schoolday sketches, ill be posting some
later on for the fun of it.
Anyway, once in London I managerd THE CHICAGO PIZZA PIE
FACTORY and later on GRUNTS restaurants in Covent garden,
It was there that I started sketching what would become
the world famous EVIL SKULL RING.
My original idea was a skull with horns and vampire fangs
but this was not practical as a ring,
The bottom jaw was not suited to my design idea either
( shown here are skulls with and without bottom jaw)
You might notice that these early sketches are dated 1981 & 1983
last page shows the final idea .My very first EVIL SKULL RING
was on my finger on the 24th of NOV 1983.
Often copied never equalled.

Yes it was exactly 19 years ago today CRAZY PIG DESIGNS
open it's doors in LONDON , Covent Garden.

We have been so busy that we completely forgot about it, but

we were reminded by some of our best friends and customers

that have been regulars since day one.

Never resting on our laurels , we are planning a lot of new things

for 2011
There will be new jewellery designs of course and Limited editions items

as well as an expanded leather goods range,this being currently

in production as we speak.

Also in the pipeline is a new Heavy Rock album

from Armand in collaboration with two big names

on bass and drums.

And to cap it all a book is also currently in production

with a major publishing company involved.

This being a big project, Armand might not be available

as often as previously.

SKULL RING in CLASSIC ROCK magazine APRIL 2011

CLASSIC ROCK , April issue features a full page advert for

CRAZY PIG DESIGNS

and a small feature title:SHARP DRESSED MAN.

The article showcases our world famous skull ring: GALLOWS.

I originaly designed the ring to be just a skull ring with

a full face hood like a medieval gallows man, but soon realised the full face

mask would pretty much hide the whole skull, and the result would

have been disappointing.

So I decided to make a skull ring and a separate mask ring that would

fit perfectly over the skull ring. so you have in fact a set of two separaterings.

The result was the GALLOWS ring (the name is inspired by one

of my favourites LED ZEPPELIN tracks " GALLOWS POLE")

The ring shown in the magazine has been customised with real rubies set

in the eyes.Others have been made with Gold masks and silver skulls

or in reverse.Satin or high polish finishes are also extra options

to make the GALLOWS skull ring a real showpiece.

Some years ago Mr LEMMY ( LEMOLA) asked me to make him

a ring with the famous WAR PIG logo

So I handed him a piece of paper from my note pad and asked him

to do a drawing

Well , here it is ( well three attempts in that order)

LEMMY own hand drawings of the WAR PIG
Anymay , I got a logo from a magazine and made the rings for him
and the rest of the band
LEMMY had #1 of course, PHIL got #2 and #3 and #4 went to WURZEL and CAMPBELL
number 5 went to ME!!!!!

CRAZY PIG DESIGNS was closed on tuesday and Wednesday for
some refurbishment, but we were back in business on Thursday
Last week VALENTINE shoppers flock to our store
and we were equally busy last weekend.with special orders
( wedding rings) and various international customers.
For example we had to size our LARGE EVIL SKULL
for a USA client to a pretty big size, and again the same ring purchased
by a Japanese lady to a tiny size.
Both collected their rings at the same time
so we took a photo to illustrate that most of our rings
can be made to a wide variety of sizes

There's a LIMITED EDITION ANNIVERSARY EVIL SKULL

One of the first Limited Edition ring that I made was for the famous brand STUSSY.
They approached me with some ideas for the design
They wanted a very chunky silver ring
with a roman profile on one side and of
course the logo STUSSY on the opposite site
They wanted the ring to look like an ancient roman ring.

Here's a little backgroung of how it came about
While I was working in the mid eighties as a jeweller
in Carnaby street I also indulge in my first passion
of playing lead guitar.The band was called PANAMA
( I wanted to call it CRAZY PIG but no one in the band

liked the name).I designed a logo fpr PANAMA

it was at first a grinning skull with bones but with hands and feet

to give it an amusing twist.The new singer in the band wore a top hat

on stage so we added a top hat to our logo

Finally we added a JACKSON guitar , because I got and

endorsement with Jackson /Charvel guitars.

The band was really a great hard rock band but as always

the manager took most of the money and weended up broke.
As I had been making jewellery for about 10 years
I decided to concentrate on jewellery designing and this is why
the store is named CRAZY PIG DESIGNS
and GOMEZ is the shop mascot

While visiting the LOUVRES museum in PARIS

I took various photos of statues with wings

and I was really amazed by the details and how

each feather was completely different from the next.

I decided to carve a large three dimentional single feather pendant following

one of the pictures I had taken and I will soon be making two more

in smaller sizes.

In 1982 I was playing guitar in various rock groups and with some spare time during the day
I started working in a little store in Carnaby street.I had a lot of friends in the music industry
like the guys at MUSIC FOR NATIONS,KERRANG. METAL HAMMER and in bands
like METALLICA, ANTHRAX, TESTAMENT, CINDERELA, BILLY IDOL etc,,
Soon this friends and contacts were asking me to make COOL JEWELLERY for them
As I had done a lot of comic book styles drawings, I started carving three dimentional
figures to be moulded and cast in metal .
My designs like THE EVIL SKULL RING, WOLF RING, PLAGUE RING, RIP ring , DEATH FROM ABOVE , ( all named by me) or MOTORHEAD ring ,EYE ring, and many more,soon became classics and favourites.

With only 17 days to go to CHRISTMAS , in the middle
of the hustle and bustle of our regular Christmas shoppers
we had the pleasure of meeting the members of BUCKCHERRY
who basically raided CRAZY PIG of some of the best pieces in store.
Althought they had to rush to various interviews ,
they hanged around as long as theycould
and tried loads and bought loads,,,
Great to meet GREAT GUYS from a REAL band that CAN PLAY!!!!!
( sorry Simon Cowell.....that is a band!!!!!!!!!)

I made my first SKULL RING years before opening

my own store CRAZY PIG DESIGNS

As a guitarist ,myself, I always was into Rock Music and imagery.

Even as a teenager I was drawing Skulls, and Superheroes ,

demons, animals etc,during classes while still at school in the South of France.

Over the years the biggest A list musicians , movie stars have worn

SKULL rings that I ve designed and made at one point or the other...

One thing that amuses me on a regular basis

is the proliferation of so called "ROCK & ROLL jewellers"

who have jumped on the SKULL RING bandwagon...

Usually that means they make ONE and only SKULL RING

and this one item gets various outfits,

like a TOP HAT/PILOT HAT/CROWN/

HEADPHONES/MICKEY MOUSE EARS, GLASSES/LONG TEETH/NO TEETH./SCARVES/

TURBAN/ ....BURKA next?

Its a real CARNIVAL but in my opinion " IT 'S CHEATING"

We have a great choice of sterliing silver cufflinks,
because sometimes the only accessory that can be worn

Sometime ago we had to send some info about CRAZY PIG DESIGNS
for a magazine folder, so I picked up a whole bunch or magazines, and
features and sent them, so they could choose what they though would
be best suited.
Among theese where a couple of shots of VICTORIA (aka POSH) & DAVID BECKHAM
wearing an eye ring and a HEAVY LINK chain bracelet from CRAZY PIG DESIGNS
that I had completely forgot about...
